Marvin Lopez and Paige Plissner are the DJs who surprise you. Not only is their knowledge of music encyclopedic in nature, but their very humble, insightful approach to how they present themselves is very refreshing. They don't make assumptions about their listeners, they're aware of their surroundings, and they understand there's a bigger picture and we're the puzzle pieces that make it up.
With a presence that grows with each subsequent showing by these two DJs, The Borrowers are proving once more that gratitude and establishing a connection with your audience is the most authentic road to making an impact. They are the focus of this week's Music Mondays feature.
1. For those uninitiated with you and your sound, who are you and what do you try to do with music?
We’re a duo DJ group that play club and “world bass.” We don’t try to do anything except make people dance, feel sweet about themselves.
2. How is your approach to music and making a scene different from your peers? How do you set yourself apart as The Borrowers?
We’re doing whatever is fun for us, like booking people we enjoy as producers or DJs. If other people are interested in those artists that’s great. We never really look for affirmation from other people; we just assume no one likes us until they tell us they do.
3. There have been a lot of trends in dance music in the span of the last 18 months. What do you think this says about the music industry?
The conversation shouldn’t really be about the music industry, but more about the consumers. Consumers are buying into these “trends," so who are we to comment on what people like? If there’s a high turnover rate on trends, and people are into it, cool.
4. For young persons looking to become involved with their local scene or who want to be a part of the music industry, what advice do you have for them?
Go out to shows and talk to people. Don’t be a dick and be grateful for opportunities. Don’t get fucked up all the time. Tell your family you love them.
