Who are you and what do you do?
I'm Amy Huang, the founder of music blog I Heart Moosiq. I have an unquenchable thirst for discovering phenomenal new music and emerging talent. I've also come to learn within the past several years that I immensely enjoy spreading the word about these discoveries in the hopes that good music can receive more exposure and bring more people the same rapture that I feel when listening to this music.
Can you tell me a little about your blog and what motivated you to work in the music industry?
Because of that love of music, I started I Heart Moosiq. I really didn't mean for it to "be" anything, just an outlet for me to express myself and post about music that moved me. I never planned to be a "part" of the music industry, and I'm incredibly grateful to have been welcomed into an amazing world full of ambitious and driven people... people full of boundless ideas, dreams, spirit, and imagination. I've made so many great friends in the process, and am truly blessed.
I Heart Moosiq features music from across the genres. If it sounds extra good to us, we'd love to share and attempt to wax poetic over it. It never made sense to me how some people detest having their favorite new bands, producers, and artists become popular. Isn't that what you WOULD want for someone who makes music you love? For them to be able to receive proper recognition, to make a living so they can continue to create art, to bring the masses joy and delight?
Somehow, my undying, honest passion for music translated into something unimaginably big. I'm fortunate to be alive in a time when, thanks to the digital age, a music fan's voice can be heard, and it's opened incredible doors for this wide eyed, rabid music head. In the end, all that matters is music, and that's what I Heart Moosiq is all about. You won't see IHM posting click bait or music gossip just to get more hits. You also won't see negative reviews on I Heart Moosiq. There's simply far too much great music out there to spend time putting down other people's work and creativity. I Heart Moosiq is about that amazing song, that one that makes you cry, laugh, dance, or stare into space and lose yourself in the recesses of your own mind. It doesn't matter if it's rock, folk, soul, R&B, electronic, hip hop, a remix, a cover, an original... It's music. And it makes us feel.
How have you and your blog grown over the past year and what have you done to help push that growth?
The past year has been somewhat revealing, to be honest. I Heart Moosiq was part of the "great Hypem purge" of 2015, and not due to integrity but for sharing "too much content". Although it initially struck me as earth shaking, after having acquired extra exposure due to being tracked by the site for over a year prior, I soon came to realize that dedication and passion overcomes all. I reminded myself that I Heart Moosiq had grown its strong fan base long before any blog aggregation ever commenced, and I had simply allowed some of the glitz and glam of being tracked unnecessarily permeate into my daily life. I've since continued to stay true to the blog's design, only sharing content based on taste and enjoyment, not out of exposure and gain, or favors and relations, and that tends to ring true to listeners and readers.
I Heart Moosiq has also begun to do occasional interviews, and my colleague Nicholas Shutes joined as the second member of our team to do special features and to coordinate and carry out much of the interviews. Regardless, our sole focus is on sharing good music, the rest is fun icing on the cake for fans. We try to make our interviews interesting with less conventional questions and more revealing banter. What's the point of an interview if the people taking the time to read it are likely fans who already know the main details about the act? I Heart Moosiq also began creating MOOSIQ MOSAIC soundcloud playlists for daily features circa a year ago, so you can easily stream most of our selected songs in an easy and continuous format. This gives the music another avenue of exposure and gives people an easy way to discover music without having to scroll through the site if they don't have the time to do so. I've always made it a point to create a "lineup" of features on IHM on a near daily basis, so that the transition is smooth going from one share to the next, often starting in the alt/folk/rock side of the spectrum and ending in electronic dance music. This exact evolution is reflected into the formatting of these Soundcloud playlists.
What are your goals for 2016?
In terms of the rest of 2016, we don't have any huge things in the pipeline as of yet, though we're more than open for any intriguing ideas or projects that might surface. As always, IHM will gladly, or rather, ecstatically continue to find and share amazing new music. Some site redesign and improvements may be on their way soon, and we may dive deeper into coverage from live events for a more immersive experience. If its more "personal" connection you crave, you can always follow I Heart Moosiq on Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram where we're more than happy to engage you in any discussion, throw some virtual high fives, share what great shows we've been hitting up, and talk about our love for Warriors basketball, among other things.
What is one tip you would give to young professionals starting out in this industry?
Stay true to yourself, be vocal about what you really love, and it will take you surprisingly far.
